Eliminate Fungal Nail Infections With SkinSpaceUK’s Laser Treatment

Wave goodbye to unsightly fungal nail infections, and hello to flip-flop ready feet, with SkinSpaceUK’s targeted laser treatments. Easy to spot but notoriously difficult to eliminate, fungal nail infections (medically known as onychomycosis or tinea unguium) are so common that one in ten of us is affected, rising to 20–50% of people aged over 60 years.

So how does a fungal nail infection occur? Fungal spores will often multiply beneath the nail, feeding off the skin or keratin in the nail. Fungal infections thrive in warm, moist conditions, such as at swimming pools or in our shoes.

Tell-tale signs to look out for include nails becoming brittle and crumbly, thickened, discolored, and distorted. The nail can become difficult to cut or may even fall off completely if left untreated. This can become a source of embarrassment, or worse still, cause pain and swelling in the skin around the nail making it painful to walk.

These stubborn microorganisms have traditionally been tricky and time-consuming to eradicate using lotions or oral antifungal drugs, which often produce side effects. But at SkinSpaceUK we can now offer a simple, pain-free way to dramatically improve both the look and health of your nails.

Fungal Nail Infection Laser Treatment – How Does it Work?

This fast, effective treatment option uses light energy beams to create heat in short, focussed bursts, erasing nail fungus right at the source. The ultra-rapid pulses gradually heat up the narrow, precise area, destroying all traces of fungal organisms without harming the surrounding nail tissue.

Over time, damaged and ugly nails are restored to their pink and pearly optimum health. And the best news is that this revolutionary, non-invasive treatment requires no recovery time – come in for a treatment during your lunch break and you can immediately carry on with your day with no symptoms!

    TREATMENT FAQs

    Does it Hurt?

While many of our clients report feeling no discomfort during the treatment, some experience a warming sensation at the targeted site. This is perfectly normal and will resolve quickly.

    How Many Treatments Are Needed?

Although this treatment is highly effective at killing the fungal spores quickly, with clinical studies showing that a single treatment reduces nail fungus and promotes clear nail growth in over 80% of cases, it can take a number of sessions to completely destroy the infection in the long term.

Our dedicated SkinSpaceUK clinicians will be able to advise on a treatment plan that is bespoke to your specific needs, depending on how severe the fungal infection is and the number of nails involved. Treatments are carried out at two to four weekly intervals and it can take up to 12 months for the infected nail to grow out.

How Can I Prepare for the Treatment?

Please do not use self-tanning lotions, sunbeds or sunbathe two weeks prior to your laser treatment as this may impair treatment results. Please advise us of medical conditions or medication(s) that you are taking including antibiotics/steroids 48hrs before every treatment, particularly drugs that may cause any photosensitivity.

Prior to your appointment, please remove nail polish thoroughly and clip your nails as far down as comfortable and don’t forget to bring a new pair of socks to wear after your appointment.

    What Does the Aftercare Involve?

Thankfully, you may resume all normal activities after treatment. Nail polish can be applied 24hrs after treatment. It is advised not to wear obstructive footwear for at least 48hrs following treatment. Apply an anti-fungal cream or tea tree oil twice daily for three months and anti-fungal powder in your shoes throughout treatment. As the fungal spores thrive in moist environments, thoroughly dry your feet including between your toes and change your towels daily. Wear flip-flops where possible rather than walking barefoot, especially in public areas such as swimming pools and spa areas.

You should soon start to notice an improvement including the thinning of thickened nails, clear nail growth at the nail bed and reduced discoloration. Healthy, happy nails are now within reach!
